ARCON arcing fault protection systems

The close proximity of low-voltage switching stations to load centres requires a high level of personnel and plant safety.

The reason: arcing faults. If a fault does occur, arcing faults always cause the most serious injuries and the worst damage to installations. Even with TSK-tested plant technology, the risk of arcing faults can never be fully excluded.

In a switching station in an inside room, an arcing fault will create a rapid temperature increase, which in turn creates a large increase in pressure. This could cause the encapsulation to explode. In the process, a mixture of toxic combustion residue and glowing particles is blown out into the direct surroundings of the switching station, presenting a serious hazard to anybody who happens to be in the vicinity of the plant.

This hazard can be eliminated by equipping the MODAN® control panels with the ARCON® arcing fault protection system.

This system not only offers a significant contribution to the safety of personnel, but also minimises the risk of prolonged down time after a fault. Experiences in the past have shown that plants can be out of action for anything from 2 days to 3 weeks after an arcing fault. With the ARCON® arcing fault protection system, this is reduced to just a few hours.

Moeller have subjected plants equipped with the ARCON system to an additional level of testing. The areas of personnel safety, plant protection and preservation of plant functionality have all been successfully tested.
